A QUICK HISTORY OF INSTAGRAM
YouTube has been THE #1 platform for video since 2005, and I have to say, I don't think YouTube is going anywhere. YouTube is a SEARCH platform not a social media network and it's owned by the largest search engine in the world, Google. But they key difference is that YouTube doesn't have a great mobile platform. Their videos are horizontal, and while it doesn't seem like that big of a deal to flip your phone horizontally, IGTV is catching on to something important: MOBILE first. And hey, humans are lazy. Even too lazy to flip their phones horizontally.
Instagram launched IGTV around the same time Instagram hit one billion members. That's more than 1/8 of the whole world's population. Let that sink in for a minute!
IGTV VS. STORIES
The biggest difference between Instagram Stories and IGTV is the watch time. Stories are just a quick snapshot when you're in the mood to quickly plow through content in sort of a halfway focused way. Videos in Stories can only be one minute long max and most are 15 seconds.
IGTV requires more attention. It's more like YouTube or an actual reality TV channel. Videos in IGTV have to be at LEAST 15 seconds long and up to 10 minutes for small accounts; one HOUR for big accounts. That's some serious content! You are compelled to go deep.
Because IGTV is designed to be a mobile-first platform - all videos are vertical. You'll never have to turn your phone horizontal.
HOW DO I START USING IGTV?
- Download the IGTV app in your preferred app store
- Sign in with your normal Instagram account
- Push the settings icon and click create channel
- Start following other channels in your niche or industry
- Like, write comments, and share videos you really love
- From the native Instagram app, click on the colorful TV icon in in the top right corner of your home feed. This allows you to easily access IGTV even though it is technically a separate app.
HOW TO UPLOAD YOUR FIRST VIDEO TO IGTV
First, you want to plan out some awesome content to share on IGTV. Since this isn't made for a quick snapshot of something funny your cat did... you want to make sure you are putting out something valuable. I recommend sharing your process if you are a designer or creative entrepreneur! Or try educating your audience even if it's explaining something simple.
- First, go to your channel and click on your icon.
- Click on the + sign to add a new video.
- Select the video you want to upload to IGTV.
- Click next.
- Click Edit Cover. Make sure you upload a compelling cover image here.
- Add a title and a description. This is your opportunity to place TONS of valuable keywords to help your tribe easily find you. And get this!! You can add links in the description! Yeahhh!! Say hello to traffic, babes.
- Hit POST. Don't be shy! ;)
HOW TO UPLOAD TO IGTV FROM YOUR COMPUTER
If you're spending time editing your videos and making some really badass content (which you should!), it may be easier to upload your videos to IGTV via your laptop or desktop computer.
IGTV BEST PRACTICES
START NOW, DON'T WAIT
Have you ever looked back and thought, "Mannn, if I knew that platform was going to be so big I would have been on it like a maniac wayyy earlier! Now, there's too much competition." I definitely felt this way about Pinterest. I had many pins go viral in the early days, because there just wasn't much content on the platform yet. I didn't foresee the ability to leverage the newness of Pinterest. Now, I know better!
Instagram is already such a hugely successful platform it's wise to bet on the success of IGTV. And do it now before the competition gets crazy. Right now, people are still figuring out IGTV. Be one of the first experimenters and figure out your strategy before your competition does!
ADD REAL VALUE ON IGTV
Like I mentioned earlier, IGTV is a place where you really want to bring major value to your audience. Teach them something, show them your process. Give them something worth watching for more than 15 seconds! Save your quickie snapshots for IG Stories.
DEVELOP YOUR BRAND FOR IGTV
IGTV is a wonderful place for you to showcase your brand. Create vertical slides that show your brand colors, fonts, and beautiful imagery. No one wants to watch you talk for 60 minutes without any kind of "break." You need to change up the focus by switching from your face to imagery and cut out at different angles.
I am treating my IGTV videos much like I treat my YouTube videos. Watch how successful YouTubers start their video, create their content, and end their video with a content upgrade. The whole purpose of creating content for your audience is to develop a relationship with them, gain their trust, offer free value, and eventually they will become paying customers. You definitely want to use this opportunity to capture their email address with a content upgrade.
I suggest getting real cozy with iMovie, or the video software of your choice, and spending some TLC editing your videos to the best they can be.
REPURPOSE OTHER VIDEOS FOR IGTV
My initial strategy is going to be repurposing my YouTube videos for IGTV. I am simply reformatting my videos to be vertical instead of horizontal and cutting down on time when need be. The idea is to create binge-worthy content - which is very similar to a YouTube strategy!
So what are your thoughts on IGTV? Are you planning on using it or are you already using it?
