TEXTILE DESIGNER SALARY | HOW MUCH DO TEXTILE DESIGN JOBS EARN?

Textile designer salaries are based on 5 factors

1 | YEARS OF EXPERIENCE

Entry level textile designers typically start out with a salary of $45,000 per year. The salary you earn all depends on how many years of experience you have under your belt. If you’re an experienced textile designer and you have around 10-20 years of experience, you can definitely make more than $45,000 per year. In fact, at your peak, you can make roughly $65,000 per year and more. Wow!

Most senior textile designers earn this salary, and most designers will only be promoted to senior textile designer after at least 10 years of experience.

2 | TALENT & PORTFOLIO

Your level talent will most definitely influence and have an impact on the salary you can earn. I would even say this is in conjunction with your years of experience. If you continue to practice your craft, you will only get better and as a result, earn more each year.

Also, a portfolio is a contributing factor in how much you earn. If you have a top-notch portfolio, and you only have three years of experience, you may be able to earn over $45,000 per year, even though you’re still in the beginning stages of your career.

Remain optimistic and realistic!

Evaluate how strong your portfolio is and how confident you feel in your ability to fulfill the job and impact the company overall. If you feel confident in your ability, then the employer will also feel confident in you and will be more likely to give you a higher salary.

3 | LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!

Unfortunately, some areas are costlier than others; say, New York, for example. Salaries will vary depending upon location. So, be sure to consider the cost of living relative to the salary you would be receiving in certain areas.

A great resource you can use is payscale.com. Payscale gives you a customized salary report based on your location and years of experience, which is pretty darn cool. You can type in your location and your years of experience and get a salary report.

The Creative Group also provides a customized salary report and it's based on the national averages (for all major cities in the U.S), the job title, and your location. It’s also been adjusted for the year 2019. However, they come out with an adjusted report every year.

4 | COMPANY GROWTH

Before deciding to work with a company, do some research on the company before your interview.

Consider asking yourself the following questions:

  • Are they having a positive year?

  • Do they have growth year after year?

  • Are they a strong company?

  • Is it a company that can afford to pay you at the higher end of your range?

Only then will you know whether or not the company is worth working for and if you’ll be able to get your desired salary.

5 | MARKET RATES

Now, just because a company has the means to pay you a higher salary, doesn't necessarily mean they should. Get to know the market rates in your area because competition with other designers is a factor and you don’t want someone else to get the job because you priced yourself too high.

On the other hand, you also shouldn’t price yourself too low; know your worth!

NOW WHAT?

Now that you have an idea of the types of salaries a textile designer can earn, be sure to work hard towards your desired salary.

Remember that even with little experience, say three years, with an outstanding portfolio, you can earn just as much as a senior textile designer who has 10 years of experience.

Utilize different resources like payscale.com and The Creative Group’s salary guide. Study the different salary trends of graphic designers and illustrators. Pay close attention to these two fields as they are mostly in line with what a textile designer earns.
